It's worth trying! Is there any way I can help?

...It's as funny as everything else in this world. It's not particularly funny or unfunny. I don't think I'll laugh at it. There's more laughable things in this world! Like opera!

It's slam poetry set to music to tell a story. Then people act the story out while reciting the poetry in front of an audience!

Yes! Opera is a major entertainment thing on my world! Rhyme, music, meter, pacing: all are key in opera's formation! It creates a lens through which a microcosm of the world can be seen!

[And being able to sing opera songs, albeit offkey, is decent training for the stamina of auditory spellcasting in battle.]

[identity profile] sandinmyboots.livejournal.com 2011-04-12 10:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, instead of directly discussing the inner experiences of the person writing it, opera usually tells a story about people! It's often based on historical records or old legends!

Like, ah...

[Kefka dives out of view for a bit, then shows back up with a big record cover. It has a multi-colored ball dominating the background and several people in dramatic costume in front of it.]

This is the 'Legend of Ozma.' Ozma was a great warrior, but she died alone and forgotten, and her feelings of loneliness and an evil spell brought her back as a mindless monster thirsty for blood. A few chocobo knights now must find a way to stop her before she makes her way to their city--and do it while working out their interpersonal drama!

There's been a few versions made in different genres.; this copy of the music is from one of the runs where it was shown tragically!

Yes! (Though I haven't seen many moving pictures.) But since it's all performed live, stuff can intervene and make the story change! The main opera house never admits that stuff isn't part of the show, so they include the changes in new plots and make more!

It is! I've only been in to see one at the grand opera, but it was great! There's actually a newsletter about the opera that we get, a new one just came in--

[Ok, disappearing again.]

[Aaaand back.]

Ok, I can't find it, but it was excellent! There was an octopus!

[identity profile] sandinmyboots.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I can try and set one up for you! I've got lots of opera records. They won't be acted out, but you should be able to hear the storyline, right?

[identity profile] sandinmyboots.livejournal.com 2011-04-13 12:26 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think there's any copies of the one that had the octopus are out yet, but I have a copy of one of the earlier versions. It's only got part of the acts, but it's still good.

Alright, let me dig it up...

[Kefka pulls a record from his collection and puts it on the record player in his room. And the music starts. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36TdZx8VgbA)]

[Kefka closes his eyes and listens along, but a close inspection would reveal he's...restless, almost.]

It probably is! It's a new thing for you, after all!
